What is a running streak?
The official definition of a running streak, as adopted by the Streak Runners International, Inc., and United States Running Streak Association, Inc., is to run at least one mile (1.61 kilometers) within each calendar day. Running may occur on either the roads, a track, over hill and dale, or on a treadmill. No runner can have their running streak listed on either the active or retired running streak list until it has reached at least one year in duration.

I first discovered what a running streak was in the middle of November 2014 as I was training for the World Marathon Challenge. One of my fellow competitors - Jon O’Shea – had just completed the first year of his run streak and had posted it to Facebook. When I saw this post, this sounded like a fun challenge that I should pursue just to keep me moving everyday.
After completing my first year on November 23, 2015, I just can’t stop going as now the history of the streak means so much to me. I am not sure when or where it will end but it will take something extraordinary to keep me from doing my mile. Despite battling food poisoning, hangovers, and extremely sore legs from doing long runs over the 3+ years of the streak, I have always found a way to tough out at least a mile. |
